CIAT Secretariat visits Jamaica
Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) recently hosted representatives of the Inter-American Centre of Tax Administrations (CIAT) Secretariat.
Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) recently hosted representatives of the Inter-American Centre of Tax Administrations (CIAT) Secretariat. They were in the island for a two day institutional visit, May 18 and 19, 2015, aimed at strengthening existing relations. During the visit CIAT Executive Secretary, Mr. Marcio F. Verdi and Director Institutional Management, Mr. Francisco Beiner met with TAJ officials and other key personnel, as well as representatives from the Tax Policy Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, to discuss providing technical
support to TAJ in the area of compliance risk identification and assessment.
The discussions focussed on assessing the needs of developing industry specific risk criteria for the selection of audit cases relating to the Large Taxpayer Office and strengthening risk strategies for medium and small taxpayers.
The CIAT team participated in working meetings with TAJ personnel from the operational areas to include the Large Taxpayer Office (LTO), Programmes Unit and Risk Management Unit. Additionally, Mr. Beiner visited the St. Andrew Revenue Service Centre (RSC) to get a
first-hand look at TAJ’s operations and to see how the recently implemented Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS) is being used to support compliance. The institutional visit is being used to assess what other technical assistance may be accommodated by CIAT.
The CIAT visit comes as the TAJ prepares to implement its National Compliance Plan (NCP), which is key element of the administration’s approach to efficient, effective risk based tax administration. The visit also forms part of TAJ’s continued thrust to modernize its operations
and improve the overall collections and compliance strategies.
Tax Administration Jamaica has had a long association with CIAT. It was through the technical support of CIAT that TAJ established the Large Taxpayer Office in 2009.
