Business persons have only one day remaining to the March 15 Income Tax Return deadline. Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is therefore urging all companies, self-employed and employed persons with other income sources to file their Annual Income Tax Return for the year 2015 and to declare their Estimated Income and Tax Payable for the year 2016 and make necessary payments.

In an effort to assist small businesses and self-employed persons, to meet the March 15 deadline, TAJ is continuing its Special Taxpayer Assistance Programme (STAP). Sessions are still being held across the island, to afford small business persons/operators an opportunity to access free support in preparing and filing their Income Tax Returns. Of particular note, is an Exposition being hosted at the Constant Spring Revenue Service Centre on Monday March 14, which will feature several entities from both the private and public sectors.

This year, the STAP sessions focus has been on registering and assisting persons to eFile their Income Tax Returns online using TAJ’s new Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS). Persons are again reminded to take their business related documents to the STAP session, of their choice, to get assistance and guidance from tax personnel to prepare and file their returns. These documents include Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN), bank statements, purchase invoices, expense receipts, sales records, utility bills and any other records that can be used to verify their income and expenses.

Despite a thrust to encourage persons to file online, TAJ has put arrangements in place at all tax offices to facilitate the large number of persons expected to come in person to the Offices. This includes the establishment of a Filing Centre at the Constant Spring Tax Office, as well as computer stations at other select locations, supported by staff to guide the online filing process. Additional personnel have also been deployed to assist in the area of floor management in an effort to reduce wait time.

TAJ wishes to remind taxpayers, that failure to file their returns on or before the Income Tax deadline will result in compliance action being taken. All categories of taxpayers are therefore advised that their returns must be filed by the March 15 due date to avoid a $5,000 monthly penalty, which may be charged for each month the return is late. Interest may also be applied to outstanding amounts owed.
