Today (March 15) is the deadline for business persons, that is, companies, self-employed persons and employed persons with other income sources to file their Annual Income Tax Return for 2015 and declare their Estimated Income and Tax Payable for 2016 and make payments. Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has made special arrangements at Tax Offices across the island and at its Customer Care Centre to accommodate the usual large number of persons expected to file their Income Tax Returns and make calls on “Tax Day”.

Taxpayers who wish to access assistance in completing their Returns may do so at any of TAJ’s locations island-wide. Additionally, several Special Taxpayer Assistance Programme (STAP) sessions will be held today to facilitate those taxpayers still hoping to meet this deadline.

The focus for this year’s Assistance Programme is on eFiling through the Authority’s new Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS). To fully benefit from this free technical guidance and expertise, taxpayers are reminded to take along all their important business related documents that is any records which can verify their income and expenses.

Additionally, all locations will remain open for one additional hour on Tuesday March 15, 2016 for the convenience of taxpayers. Offices will therefore close at 5:00 p.m. This will support the other arrangements which have been made in anticipation of the heavy last minute traffic. A Filing Centre has been set-up at the Constant Spring Tax Office as well as computer stations at other select locations, supported by staff to guide the online filing process. Extra personnel have also been deployed to assist in the area of floor management in an effort to reduce wait time.

TAJ wishes to remind taxpayers, that failure to file their returns on or before the Income Tax deadline will result in compliance action being taken. All categories of taxpayers are therefore advised that their returns must be filed by the March 15 due date to avoid a $5,000 monthly penalty, which may be charged for each month the return is late. Interest may also be applied to outstanding amounts owed.
