TAJ Carries Out Successful Tax Enforcement Operation

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is reporting a 100% success rate from its recently concluded arrest operation named Old Capital 2.1. Eight taxpayers were brought before the Spanish Town Parish Court on arrest warrants between September 26 and 27, 2018. Two other taxpayers targeted in the operation, had settled their obligations in full and are expected to return to Court.

The Tax Authority’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) which collaborated with the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s St. Catherine North and South Divisions, targeted seven males and three females in Spanish Town and Portmore, who failed to pay their taxes and appear at the Spanish Town Parish Court. Consequently the Court had issued arrest warrants.

Four of the taxpayers were granted bail with their own surety, several of the warrants have been vacated and three of the cases have been discharged. Consequent to the enforcement action, in excess One Million dollars in outstanding taxes was recovered.

TAJ continues to carry out enforcement activities to ensure the protection of the revenue and warns taxpayers who have defaulted on their arrangements or a Court Order that strong enforcement action will be taken against them.

Taxpayers are encouraged to speak with the Tax Authority to make suitable arrangements, if they are faced with difficulties in honouring their tax obligations, particularly where a judgement has been handed down by the Court.
