Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is currently hosting an eight (8) member delegation from the Turks and Caicos Revenue Department, during a one (1) week professional attachment, February 29 to March 4, 2016. The attachment is aimed at exposing the visitors to a range of functional areas in TAJ, which will enhance capacity building and professional development.
During the visit, the delegation, led by Assistant Commissioner Nasiya Misick, will understudy TAJ’s operations, legal and strategic services areas to develop an understanding of best practices utilized in the various functions of Tax Administration. Accordingly, the primary purpose of the attachment is to afford officers of the visiting Revenue Department, the opportunity to focus on TAJ’s operations in the areas of Audit, Taxpayer Services, Collections and Compliance, as well as review the legal framework and strategic planning process used
by TAJ.
The delegation will be exposed to the Revenue Service Centre concept, which is a “one-stop shop”, offering all TAJ services, by visiting the Constant Spring Revenue Service Centre and being immersed in the activities. They will also get the opportunity to see the operations of a small rural tax office on their visit to the Linstead Tax Office.
During a briefing session held Monday, February 29, the head of the delegation, Nasiya Misick, indicated that Jamaica was chosen for the study visit because, “Over the past years, Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has successfully implemented many reform initiatives making it a model Tax Administration in the region and the ideal administration to host this attachment”. She further explained that, “although The Turks and Caicos Revenue Department has introduced several reform and capacity building initiatives over the past couple years, it strongly believes that exposure to operations in another jurisdiction will enhance capacity building and professional development thus optimizing the delivery of the Department’s programs”.
The Turks and Caicos delegation comes as TAJ is implementing changes in its operations to include its National Compliance Plan (NCP), which is a key element of the Administration’s approach to efficient, effective risk, based Tax Administration. The visit also coincides with TAJ’s continued modernization of its operations, with the recent rollout of its Revenue Administration System (RAiS) and the thrust to improve the overall collections and compliance strategies.
